This evening I was making calls to encourage people who live in my district in KY to vote for Kim King as our next State Representative. I met Kim last year on the bus that I rode in to Washington, D.C. for the March on Washington rally. She is one of the most amazing women I’ve met. What makes her so amazing? She’s a Christian who walks the walk and doesn’t just talk the talk. She has a glow and a twinkle in her eye that makes you realize this woman is a truly, authentic, honest-to-the-bone woman! And she is a Conservative woman running for office because she wants to make a difference in our state’s political well-being. She doesn’t seek the recognition that goes along with holding a political office. She seeks to be used by God in a way that will glorify Him. I couldn’t help but jump on her team and become her County Coordinator. Let me add that I live in a highly-populated Democrat county. Conservative Democrats, but Democrats nonetheless. It’s a very good-ole-boy county but we’ve made a lot of headway because Kim talks to people and tells them exactly what she is going to do when elected.
Back to this evening. I made a call and asked to speak with a lady and after introducing myself and letting her know that I’m a volunteer for the Kim King for State Representative campaign, she interrupted and said very firmly, “I wouldn’t vote if my life depended on it!” and hung up. A part of me was hoping she was kidding but unfortunately I got the impression she was serious. And that makes me sad.
Did our forefathers fight and die so we can have the right to vote? Didn’t women have to work especially hard for that right to vote? Isn’t the very topic of voting mentioned in 4 of our Constitutional Amendments? It’s our right to vote and if someone chooses not to vote, they are making a decision to let others decide how our country should be run. But to say they wouldn’t vote if their life depended on it made me concerned. Who is to say that one day we may have a government that decides we won’t have the right to vote anymore? Who is to say that one day we may wake up to see our Constitution burned to ashes as our American flag is allowed to be desecrated? As Ronald Reagan once said, “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” With freedom comes responsibility. We are responsible to vote for our elected officials who make decisions that will not only impact our lives, but the lives of future generations. If we leave our vote up to our next door neighbor, how can we guarantee they did their research and knew what the candidate they are voting for will vote for when in office? We must be responsible in knowing the politicians that we are voting for and make the decision to vote for the candidates that best represent our values. When we take for granted the freedoms we have been given through the small document called our U.S. Constitution, we can only be guaranteed of one thing. Those rights can be taken away much easier than they were given to us. Yes, we have a responsibility. Tomorrow on November 2nd, we have a responsibility to vote. I hope you take advantage of that right because one day your life may depend on the vote you choose to make.
Your post made me cry Kimberly, have we really come to the point where we would rather die than to make a decision? Really? What will it take for some people to take this privilege seriously. I know many think it’s still a right to vote and I guess technically it still is in this country, but are they even glancing at the news? Some people’s right to vote has already been taken away in this country by thugs. The most deserving among us, in my humble opinion, our brave men and women, have sent absentee ballots that will never be counted. Their right has been stolen. Our right to vote is quicky becoming a privilege, and if we don’t take it seriously, it may become a luxury or absent altogether. Wake your neighbors up America, some of us are still asleep!!!
Thank you Kimberly!
I’m voting in all races except that I may not vote in the Senate race. If I vote, it will be a write-in for Trey Grayson.
